We have joined hands with local groups in the areas where we work. One such group is “Save the Elderly – Uganda.” Their mission is to help those advanced in years with the issues particular to their situation.
Many seniors in villages in the Luwero area experience enormous burdens from caring for the children of their dead sons and daughters, many of whom were lost during Uganda’s liberation war and a sizeable number having died of HIV/AIDS.
These seniors often barely have enough resources to sustain themselves without the added burden of their grandchildren.
Because many of these seniors live far from the free Universal Primary Education (UPE) schools, the grandchildren end up not attending school. “Save the Elderly” in particular has come to their aid and gathers the children during school days into a dormitory so they can attend school. The children attend school and are returned to their grandparents when school is in recess.
Often these children lack the basics of life such as food, medicine, and clothing. Through partnership with “Save the Elderly” ROWH not only provides medical services to the elderly, but it feeds and provides medicine to their grandchildren, free of charge. Some elderly are not only HIV/AIDS victims themselves but also care for grand children that are HIV/AIDS positive.
As funds allow, we are also able to build homes for the distressed elderly who live in dilapidated unsafe shelters thus providing them with security and dignity when they need it most.
